Electronic Identification (EID) FAQ

Q: Can an EID tag store information like treatments, movement, etc?

A: No, the tag itself does not store information. Think of it like a barcode for your cattle. When the tag is scanned by an EID reader, the only information that the tag provides is the individual 15 digit number that is assigned to it. In order to keep records of weights, treatments, animal movement, etc software or external equipment like a scale indicator or EID reader is needed.

Q: If I put these tags in my cattle will I be able to track them if they get out?

A: No, Allflex EID tags use low frequency technology. This means that the read range on the tags is between 13”-16” for Full Duplex tags and 15”-18” for Half Duplex tags.  They do not include any GPS tracking technology.

Q: Should I use HDX or FDX EID tags?

A: The read range on both the FDX and HDX are fairly similar with the FDX range being 13”-16” and the HDX being 15”-18”. FDX tags are slightly more susceptible to interference from fluorescent lights and steel objects. However, they work well for most operations.

Q: Why is a premises ID required to purchase USDA compliant EID tags?

A: A premises ID number is a unique code that is permanently assigned to your farm/ranch location. They are administered by each state and allows animal health officials to quickly and precisely identify where animals are located in the event of an animal health or food safety emergency.  Learn more about Premises ID or find your State Animal Health Department.

Q: What if I don’t need USDA compliant EID tags?

A: We do sell Standard EID tags as well. They begin with the number 982 instead of 840 and they are strictly for farm use only. A premises ID number is not needed to purchase these.

Q: How do I know if I need USDA compliant tags for a specific show or sale?

A: We suggest contacting your state's animal health office or the show/sale barn. They should be able to provide you with those specific requirements.

Q: Why can’t I order the orange OCV Eid tags?

A: Only Veterinarians can order Brucellosis OCV Eid tags, they must provide a non-producer participant number (NPN) to purchase tags. Each non-producer participant obtains an NPN through the premises registration system in the state or territory of the company’s headquarters to receive and distribute AIN devices. The NPN number looks similar to a PIN.

Q: What are USDA EID Tags?  Why are they called official tags?

A:  USDA EID tags are specialized tags used for identifying cattle and other livestock.  These tags contain a unique 15-digit number on each tag starting with 840, and including the US shield.  These tags are considered official because they comply with specific standards set by the USDA. The "official" designation typically means that these tags meet requirements related to traceability, which is crucial for disease control, food safety, and regulatory purposes. EID tags contain electronic information that can be read electronically, making them more efficient for tracking individual animals within the livestock supply chain.  Learn more about USDA Traceability.
